I have a heart problem that causes me to black out (My heart rate is reduced to about 20 to 15 beats per minute). just wondering if anyone knows of a clock that will sound alarm if the heart rate drops. Something like the movie Hulk just the opposite.

Instead of trying to find an alarm, I would go to the MD. If your heart rate is really low and let you pass out, it seems you need a pacemaker. That certainly is not normal at all.

There are a few main differences between men’s shoes and women’s shoes. First, men’s shoes frequently fit differently than womens, and they are different sizes – about 1-1.5 sizes different, at least in US sizes. You will have to check if there is also a difference with UK sizes. Also, men’s shoes are usually wider all the way (standard width is B in women’s, D in men’s, I think), and even more wider in the heel. Finally, men’s shoes are usually built for heavier people, so they tend to give extra support (and weight).

Of course, they also look a little different, especially with the colors. As far as whether they are ok to wear, well, as the saying goes, “if the shoe fits, wear it.”

Five Reasons Why You Hit the Wall and Run Out Of Energy In a Marathon or Triathlon

1) A PROPER HYDRATION PLAN DOES NOT EXIST IN YOUR RACE PREPARATION

The key to proper hydration leading up to and during a marathon or Ironman is not how much you drink or even “what” you drink so much as it is “when” you drink. If your marathon or Ironman triathlon is Sunday as most of them seem to be, then drinking as much fluid as you can gag down on Saturday or 60 minutes before the race start on Sunday morning is not the road to optimum hydration for your event.

If anything, the last decade or so there has been more awareness building of the dangers of drinking “too much”. This is a departure from what many old school runners grew up with over the past 30 years or so. It seemed that it was impossible to drink to much and the mantra was “the more the better” and “eight glasses a day” and on and on about constantly drinking water whether you were thirsty or not.

Some people still follow that formula and often suffer the consequences. Serious issues can arise by drinking far too much and flushing too many essential minerals out of the system by over-doing it with the drinking.

If you are a triathlete standing knee-deep in the water with a few thousand others waiting for the starting gun of an Ironman triathlon, or perhaps toeing the start-line of that first marathon with four liters of water and sports replacement drink sloshing around in the stomach, chances are you have not hydrated properly.

It is almost certain that this is going to be one very uncomfortable 2.4 mile swim or 26.2 mile marathon that could well end up in disaster. Nausea, motion-sickness, vomiting, and a constant need to urinate during the swim or run or bonking at about mile 18 of the marathon will most likely be the reward for this scenario.

Of course the danger of not hydrating enough before and during a race is always a possibility and perhaps the biggest mistake most athletes make and will very quickly turn an endurance event into a painful experience.

2) WHEN TO EAT AND WHAT TO EAT IS A MYSTERY

As disappointing as it might be, the size of your pasta dinner the night before the big race is not the secret to a great eating plan as you ramp things up for the big race in the morning. Many people either eat too much, too little, or the wrong food simply because they have no idea what is best. Or perhaps they read in a book about that special meal that worked for someone else and decide to give it a try on race eve.

like a fined-tuned, high performance car you are ready to give it your best. Just like the car you are all tuned up and ready for action for your big day and none of it will matter if the fuel you use is low-grade. No matter how shiny, powerful, and sleek you are, if you use cheap fuel(or too much or not enough of it) your engine will sputter and maybe even just quit altogether when you try and put the pedal to the metal.

3) YOU ARE TIRED ON RACE-DAY

It’s amazing how often this happens. By the time some people get to the start line of their big race they are already feeling tired and not really physically primed to give their best performance. In almost every case, these people are over-trained and have not given their bodies proper time to recover from the training leading up to their big race. This is a recipe for disaster if ever there was one.

There is simply nothing more deflating than a person devoting weeks, months, and in some cases years to reach the start line of their first marathon or Ironman triathlon and already feel spent before they are ten minutes into the race. It happens over and over again. So many new runners and triathletes have it in their heads that if they take days off from training, they will lose all they have worked so hard to gain.

Nothing could possibly be further from the truth.

4) YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW A HEART-RATE MONITOR WORKS OR ABOUT RACE-PACE

A heart-rate monitor is quite possibly one of the best tools ever devised for allowing distance runners and triathletes to perform at optimum levels. Unfortunately, there are many people who have never used one or who might actually wear heart monitors but are not quite sure what they are supposed to do and how to get the most from them.

They watch with interest as their heart rate climbs as they go uphill and goes down when they run downhill. Often people are in a marathon and power their way up the steep hills feeling this is giving them a great advantage over those who take their time. Then these same people take a breather when the hill slopes downward. It might seem great at the time, but it’s completely backwards.

This person will most likely run out of fuel at about the 16-18 mile mark and run face first into the mystical “wall”. The wall is not a mystery at all and there is a very good reason why it appears where it does in virtually any distance race that lasts over two hours.

5) YOU LACK SELF-CONFIDENCE AND MIGHT FEEL YOU DON’T BELONG AT THE START LINE

You get to the big race and you look around and see all these people who look so fit and strong. You begin to doubt yourself and wonder if you really belong in the same place with all these amazing athletes.

Something inspired you to take on this physical, mental, and emotional challenge and against all odds here you are at the start line. Who would ever have thought it possible? But deep down you feel you might have taken on too much and you simply do not belong here.

Something will go wrong and you will fail. You will look foolish to all your friends, co-workers, and family who have wondered at all this training you have done. There is no end to the depressing thoughts that cross your mind as you wait for the starting gun.

These five reasons are often why so many people struggle through marathons and the longer distance triathlons like the half-ironman and the ironman triathlon. Often the results are the same race after race because the same mistakes are made over and over again. Until changes are made in the way one approaches endurance races it’s unlikely that things will ever change.

Ironman – Some thoughts on diets

The diets of training offered in dozens of shapes and sizes. It just made you mad! Trying to figure out what to eat and not eat. Especially when you start doing serious training and hungry when I get home. Well, the good news is that I've tried pretty well all major diets in recent years (and some not so great) and can cut much of the guesswork for you. And no, I have a degree in nutrition. I got my credentials in the kitchen and table.

In the early years most of us beginners Ironman had no idea about dieting. Most of us use the famous diet, much loved seafood. You see food and eat it.

Seriously, after a few years began to realize how important diet was when training for an event so physically demanding as the Ironman. I think I can honestly say that I took something good out of all the diets I've tried. Well, almost.

A few years ago, I tried a diet for 4 months keeps everything needed was a lot of protein and carbohydrate not much. Against my better judgment, but only to see what happened, I gave a try.

After 4 months on this diet, I entered a 10 km race and shortly after the gun went off (oh, about 5-6 seconds) I knew I was in trouble. I had zero energy and the 100 – 10km races that have come in recent years this was my worst (For now).

I think I can say with great certainty that an endurance athlete should be without a high protein, fat, low carb diet! May works for a segment of the population, but certainly not meant for everyone.

Of all the reading I've done, and every diet I tried I'm 100% certain carbohydrates are the key to the ideal diet Ironman Triathlon. I'm not talking simple carbs here. I really try to avoid sugar … keep away from cakes and cookies – the ice cream and chocolate. For the year or so devoted to carrying out his dream of Ironman, stay focused on your diet. Trust me; everything will be much more fun to enjoy when it's over.

If anything, I went overboard on the scale of carbohydrates. Was an important part of my diet. It is not for everyone. Just make sure that on a percentage basis that carbohydrates are always superior to their intake of protein and fat. Try to keep your protein and fat around the same percentages. Some of the best sources of carbohydrates include pasta, brown rice, wholemeal bread, well all vegetables and a controlled amount fruit because they have too much sugar. I thought I was making a big mistake. I've always used the white paste and ate tons of potatoes, because I knew they were one of the purest forms of carbohydrates. To my surprise a few years ago, my doctor said my bad cholesterol was too high. After talking about my diet reducing too many carb high glycemic index. White pasta I ate every day and all the potatoes. So now I always use paste whole wheat and cut the potatoes and substitute with sweet potatoes. Problem solved.

Of proteins that have several options preferable. Egg whites are awesome. Give yolks with the neighbor who is on that diet. Or do scambled eggs 3 egg whites and whole egg. Limited to 3 or 4 whole eggs per week. From the dairy aisle are your best bets low-fat cheese, plain yogurt (not those fruity) and skim milk. Since the passage of the meat (if you eat meat) chicken and turkey white meat (yes, and take the skin off that is where most fat is stored), and a small amount of lean beef maybe once, but no more than twice a week. Fish, of course, is a great option. There is nothing wrong with canned tuna or salmon. Do not foget legumes, and soy products are a staple of Irom many athletes today.

The fatty part of your diet is often found in the proteins we eat. There will be fat cheese and turkey or chicken or meat you eat. There will be fat in 3 or 4 whole eggs you eat each week if desired. There will be a small amount of fat in skim milk. Fish also provide a some fat, and I know it's expensive, but salmon is awesome for protein and fat (oil Omega). The oil you prefer and used for years is Vigin olive oil. That is until I found the coconut oil. Now I use both. A less expensive option is the canola oil. Try to have vinegar olive oil and coconut oil tossed in your salad and top with cottage cheese. A great example of complex carbohydrates, good fats and proteins.

Notes: condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, salad dressings, etc.) should be used sparingly. Cheddar cheese is fine, but try to stick to 6.8 ounces per week. Their best cheeses are hard cheeses. Option number one is parmesan (grated) for pasta. Do not use jam .. too much sugar .. I really, really like peanut butter and is well in controlled amounts, if you buy the real thing has a half inch of oil on top and is a pain to mix (but hey it means the right). DO NOT use peanut butter powdered sugar that has mixed in it and not the oil on top. To add the icing sugar so you can make it smooth for you and you do not have to mix at home.

As for their beverage choices, use skim milk as I mentioned above. Do not be afraid of aspartame. It is a much better choice than sugar and allows the use of sweeteners in coffee, etc. So that means you can drink diet pop on occasion (with aspartame) Another great option is glass lite (also the use of aspartame), if you prefer a more gentle with the water (like me). Who said that drinking 8 glasses of water a 0r 6 days, you must be a joke. Would GAG that much water every day.

I find that what you eat really goes a long way to determining who thirst and the amount of water you baby. I think if you eat an inordinate amount of carbohydrates like me, who require less water. Do not forget, fresh vegetables, for example, are about 75-80% water. And I have a huge salad every day. Beer or wine is good in extreme moderation. Maybe three drinks a week and drink light beer. Getting drunk is not a great idea when you are in an Ironman triathlon training diet. What causes dehydration and very well ruin your training the next day.

Some notes Important: Do not get me wrong. When you are on long trips and runs two hours and more, be sure that plenty of water or some type of fluid replacement. Do not go crazy in the water, while training though. More and more athletes are leaving too much water and flushing problems too many nutrients and causing physical as a result. (Hyponatremia)

Also: As for the amount you eat.

You are training for a Triathlon Ironman. When I diet, I'm not talking about the amounts consumed. I'm talking about the food you choose to eat. Trust me. One day, if you go for a swimming training followed closely by a 50 or 60 mile bike, going to be hungry. Do not worry about how much you eat. When you are actually training their body will tell you how much you need to eat. I like to call my "brain centers."

I have "never" measured, or concerned about the amount to eat when I'm in training. I'm 145-150 pounds and eat tons! I know everyone has a different metabolism, but in the same way, you know perfectly when you've had a day of hard training. Eat accordingly.

In many sports, not just triathlon athletes to train religiously for months and not realize their full potential due to an inadequate diet.

Do not let this happen to you.

I'm 18 weeks and rented a fetal heart monitor doppler rhythm of the heart's belly on the Internet. We were able to hear the heartbeat for the first 2 nights, but during the last two have not been able to find it. I do not know how reliable are these Doppler, so do not know whether to worry or what. What do you think? Let me know your experience.

The couple only knew who bought one of these God had not wished for the same reason you mentioned above. Sometimes you would not hear the heartbeat, and when he could, there was panic. So what happened was that it became almost an obsession. And had to check the heartbeat through the day. But I'm not saying do not use or enjoyment. It is a wonderful thing to enjoy! Just keep in the back of your mind that you will not always hear the heartbeat with early pregnancy and that's fine! Congratulations.

Patients with type 2diabetes experience better glycemic levels if they perform both aerobic and resistance exercises, compared to patients with diabetes who don’t do those, researchers from Louisiana State University System, Baton Rouge wrote in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). Patients who did just one or the other, either resistance training or aerobic exercise did not enjoy the same improvements, the authors added.

It has been known for a long time that individuals with type 2 diabetes benefit substantially from exercises. However, nobody has been very sure what type – aerobic or resistance – is best.
The authors wrote:

“Given that the 2008 Federal Physical Activity Guidelines recommend aerobic exercise in combination with resistance training, the unanswered question as to whether for a given amount of time the combination of aerobic and resistance exercise is better than either alone has significant clinical and public health importance.”

Hart-D-trial

Timothy S. Church, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., set out to find out what effect aerobic training, resistance training, or both might have on 262 sedentary male and female patients with type 2 diabetes. Specifically, they measured A1c levels (HbA1c, a minor component of hemoglobin and to which glucose is bound). HbA1c levels can tell the doctor and patient how well the diabetes is being controlled.
63% of the patients were female, the average age of all of them (male and female) was 56 years, and they had HbA1c level of 7.7% and duration of diabetes of 7.1 years. 47.3% of them were not Caucasian.
Between April 2007 and August 2009 they entered the following exercise programs:

• A non-exercise control group – 41 participants
• Resistance training group – 73 participants
• Aerobic training group – 72 participants
• Combined aerobic and resistance training group (combination group) – 76 participants

The absolute change in HbA1c in the combination group compared to the control group was -0.34%.
The resistance group’s absolute change at -0.16%, and the aerobic group’s -0.24% were not considered significant.
The prevalence of hypoglycemic medication increases were 18% in the combination group, 22% in the aerobic group, 32% in the resistance training group, and 39% in the control group.
The authors wrote:

“Only the combination exercise group improved maximum oxygen consumption compared with the control group. All exercise groups reduced waist circumference from [-.75 to -1.1 inches] compared with the control group.”

The combination group lost 3.7 lbs in mass fat compared to the control group. The resistance group lost 3.1 lbs compared to the control group.
The authors wrote:

“The primary finding from this randomized, controlled exercise trial involving individuals with type 2 diabetes is that although both resistance and aerobic training provide benefits, only the combination of the 2 were associated with reductions in HbA1c levels. It also is important to appreciate that the follow-up difference in HbA1c between the combination training group and the control group occurred even though the control group had increased its use of diabetes medications while the combination training group decreased its diabetes medication uses.”

In an Editorial in JAMA, Canadian researchers, Ronald J. Sigal, M.D., M.P.H., Glen P. Kenny, Ph.D., and Dr. Sigal wrote:

“Based on the results of the HART-D trial, patients with type 2 diabetes who wish to maximize the effects of exercise on their glycemic control should perform both aerobic and resistance exercise. The HART-D trial clarifies that, given a specific amount of time to invest in exercise; it is more beneficial to devote some time to each form of exercise rather than devoting all the time to just one form of exercise.”
